The perfect companion

With help from Ridgeway Telecare and a golden retriever, multiple sclerosis sufferer Liz Mooney has kept her independence.

Liz, 57, is wheelchair bound but her life has been transformed since she paired up with Queenie, a six-year-old canine assistance dog.

Living alone, Liz relies on Queenie to help her with everyday tasks such as opening doors, turning on lights, getting dressed, removing laundry from the washing machine and shopping. She is also trained to trigger Liz’s lifeline alarm with her paw on command.

Liz got the lifeline alarm to give herself and her family some peace of mind. The alarm is linked through the home telephone to a control centre where trained operators will answer the call straight away and summon help.

"Queenie is a very special friend that I wouldn’t be without. I’ve made so many friends in the village because everyone stops for a chat when they see her.”
