Making a world of difference

Moving to St Paul’s Court, Ridgeway’s extra-care scheme, made a world of difference to Janet Chaston.

She was living with husband Ron in a sheltered housing scheme but was parted when he had a fall following a hip replacement. After a spell in hospital Ron was discharged to a nursing home.  Janet visited Ron almost every day, which cost a lot in taxi fares, and it was heart breaking to go home without him.

When Janet learned that they might be eligible for an extra-care home, it seemed the perfect solution. The couple could live together in their own apartment, keep their independence but know support was on hand for Ron when he needed it.

After filling in an application form and several interviews to assess Ron and Janet’s support needs, the couple were offered an apartment at St Paul’s Court and moved in.

The couple were very happy at St Paul’s Court but sadly Ron passed away. Despite her grief, Janet has found a new lease of life by launching a support group to help people who’ve got a rare eye problem.

Janet suffers from dystonia which makes her eyes clamp shut for days at a time. Now Janet has launched the Plymouth and South Devon Dystonia Support Group, which meets monthly at St Paul’s Court, to help other people.

“I'm so happy at St Paul’s Court. I have my independence but there’s always someone I can call on when we need help. It’s just how life should be for older people,” said Janet.
