When Ray Smart, 81, had his leg amputated, his house needed some adaptations so he could remain living at home. So, his occupational therapist referred him to Ridgeway Care & Repair.
Care & Repair’s caseworker helped Mr Smart to apply for a disabled facilities grant and organised a new stair lift to be fitted. She also realised that more could be done to make life easier for Mr Smart and his wife, who was also unwell.
The house was freezing cold, as the couple couldn’t carry the heavy coal to heat the boiler. And, with Mr Smart’s disability, climbing into the bath had become impossible.
His caseworker organised a new central heating system and a level access shower was installed with another disabled facilities grant. A decent home grant paid for better wall and roof insulation and some replacement windows.
