Explaining service charges

On top of rent some tenants, leaseholders, shared owners and freeholders have to pay service charges.  They cover the cost of things like cleaning shared hallways, electricity for hallway lighting and grass cutting in shared areas.

Who pays service charges?

Service charges are only paid by residents in homes that have a direct benefit from a service. The charges are split equally across the homes. The number of people living in a home will not make a difference to the charges.

For example, the cost of cleaning communal areas in a block of flats will be divided between the number of flats in that block.

Examples of common service charges
