Protecting vulnerable adults from abuse

Abuse can happen to adults, especially when they are vulnerable.

Types of abuse

There are many types of abuse, including:

  • Emotional abuse – being threatened, bullied or left alone for a long time

  • Financial abuse – borrowing money and not paying it back, having money or belongings stolen or being tricked out of benefits

  •  Sexual abuse – being raped, touched or kissed against will, being made to touch or kiss someone or listen to sexual comments

  • Physical abuse – being hit or slapped, locked in or given the wrong medication on purpose

Recognising vulnerable adults

A vulnerable adult could be someone:

  • old and needing help from other people
  • with a physical or learning disability
  • who needs support because of mental ill health
  • with an alcohol or drugs addiction.

Abuse can happen in different places, such as in the home, a hospital, a day centre, the work place or in public. Abusers are often known to the person, such as a family member, friend, neighbour or professional.
