Golden oldies celebrate older people

Age is no barrier to singing, Sarsen and Ridgeway residents showed at a sing-along to celebrate Age No Barrier week.

The housing associations roped in Bath-based charity Golden-Oldies for an afternoon of nostalgia, as residents from four supported housing schemes sang songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The event at Sarsen’s retirement housing scheme Seymour Court in Burbage was part of a week-long celebration to raise the profile of older people and the contribution they make to their community. As well as the sing-along, residents were treated to a cream tea accompanied by piano music.

Sixty-four-year-old Alex Anderson said: “It was a wonderful afternoon, I love singing and the songs were like old friends. You just had to join in. I wish we could get together like this every week.”

Golden-Oldies was founded last year by Grenville Jones, who was recognised in the 2009 City of Bath Mayor’s Citizen of the Year Awards.  The charity aims to bring fun and friendship to older people through singing and music. Many older people live in isolation and miss out on regular contact with family and friends.

Age No Barrier Week was organised by Wiltshire and Swindon Users Network (WSUN), Age Concern and NHS Wiltshire. Events organised by housing providers, the council, day centres, schools and community groups took place all week across the county.
